About Our Visits

The Science Alliance has options for in-class visits, after-school visits, and community events such as Girl and Boy scouts and community park events. Our program is subject to volunteer availability, but with sufficient volunteers, we are flexible and will work with you to tailor our programming to your needs!

This summer (2015), the Science Alliance team has been hard at work to develop relevant, hands-on stations that supplement existing curriculum and standards. We use Minnesota Department of Education standards, MCA-III Test Items, and the Next Generation Science Standards to inform our curriculum.

After School Visits

How does it work?

  • 1 - 1.5 hours once per week

  • 4 - 6 week periods

  • St. Olaf volunteers teach and mentor students, helping them to explore each station.

  • Students have the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and present their work to their peers.

We would love to have teachers join in on the FUN, even in the after school setting!

Community Visits

Learning about science shouldn't only happen in the classroom--we want to involve all students in the excitement of science and technology! Whether you are a group that specializes in science, or a youth group looking for a fun activity, we're here to help!

What does a community visit look like?

  • 1.5 – 2 hours, flexible scheduling to fit your group's needs. We are available for afterschool, evening, and weekend events!

  • We can host you on campus OR come to your location - if we host you, we also offer tours of the campus.

  • Small group stations, rotating so that each child has a chance to work hands-on.

  • St. Olaf College students facilitate our stations and act as role model scientists.

  • FUN and hands-on - not a typical science class! â€‹

  • For curricula, we offer Green Energy, Wonderful Water, and Save the Penguins, OR we can develop something new for you! We have experience doing the Science patch for Brownies & Juniors.

  • Optional pre-visit and post-visit activities designed to complement our visit

We believe in a holistic education: science does not occur by itself but is connected to all other disciplines. By connecting other disciplines with science, we emphasize that science education is accessible and FUN!
